Emergency Dentistry

What Are The Most Common Dental Emergencies?

There are a few different kinds of dental emergencies. Some dental emergencies are cause by dental injuries, including impacts from contact sports or slip and fall accidents.

These injuries include missing (avulsed) teeth, impacted teeth (teeth that are pushed into the socket), loose teeth, and cracked, chipped, and broken teeth.

However, chronic dental problems can also lead to dental emergencies. Untreated tooth decay or periodontal disease, for example, can lead to serious tooth pain that cannot be treated at home.

Damaged dental work also counts as a dental emergency. If a crown or filling get damaged or falls out of your mouth, for example, you should seek help as soon as possible.

In general, a dental emergency is any oral health condition that is causing you significant pain, and that you cannot treat on your own. If your condition meets these two requirements, it is a dental emergency.

How Soon Should I See An Emergency Dentist At Lake Minnetonka Dental?

For ideal results, and to minimize your pain and suffering, you should seek care within 6-12 hours of your emergency occurring. Fast treatment is often required in order to save a damaged tooth, and you’ll want to get out of pain quickly.

With our large staff of doctors, dental assistants, and support staff, Lake Minnetonka Dental is always ready to help you in an emergency situation. We offer after-hours and weekend appointments for dental emergencies. Contact us now to learn more.

What Can I Do While I Wait For My Emergency Dental Appointment In Wayzata?

After you have made an appointment at our dental practice, you can take a few basic steps to address the pain brought on by your dental emergency.

Pain can be reduced by taking ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or another over-the-counter pain medication. If you are experiencing bleeding, aspirin should not be used, because it is a blood thinner and may prevent proper clotting.

Bleeding can be stopped by applying gentle pressure to the area with clean gauze pads or cotton balls, and should subside within a few hours of the injury. If the mouth continues to bleed excessively for multiple hours, consider seeing a doctor at an urgent care clinic, or the emergency room.

Inflammation and swelling can be treated with ice packs applied externally, but under no circumstances should ice or cold packs be placed in direct contact with the injury site.
